Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2020

Duncan has been a hugely valuable member of our team and crucial to prepare both ourselves and our boat for an ocean row. He has extensive experience and huge commitment to his teams (his support even continued during his row around Britain). Duncan’s approach of adapting his training to the aims and experience of his teams combined with a good sense of humour made our sessions with him very fun and effective!

Not only is ‘Coach’ a true gent, he is one of the most professional and experienced ocean rowing figures in the global community. For any individual or team looking to do an ocean row, we couldn’t recommend Duncan more highly. His experience, knowledge and enthusiasm to teach is invaluable. At every point, he has exceeded expectation – we couldn’t have asked for more! During what has been a very tough 6 months through Covid, he has kept us motivated and inspired. We can’t thank him enough. ‘Sending…!’

Duncan is without doubt, great at what he does. His experience and knowledge of rowing on a Concept2 and on Oceans is second to none – his World Records on both water and dry land back up these credentials. During our time with Duncan the team’s technique, strength and endurance have improved massively and he has taken us – in a very short period - from complete novices to skilled operators of an Ocean rowing boat.
— Richard Stewart, Skipper of For A Fitter Planet - TWAC 2020

Duncan has been an integral part of our team, right the way through to the race start. The knowledge and experience he was able to bring to our campaign not only made us a stronger, more competitive team, but also a better, safer team. He’s a brilliant coach and an essential component to anyone considering an ocean row.

Duncan’s breadth of knowledge and ocean rowing experience has helped equip us with the skills we need to be safe and successful on the ocean. His attention to detail means that no stone has been left unturned. Three words to best describe him? Reliable, approachable, and committed.

Just awesome is how I’d describe Duncan’s training! He pulled together an amazing training package at very short notice and delivered on every element I requested. Not only that but I asked to be stress tested on my knowledge, skill and preparation for the TWAC 2020 race and boy did he put me through my paces! Not only that but his follow up service and his boundless enthusiasm to help is exceptional. I cannot recommend him highly enough.
— Martyn Thornton, Atlantic Solo - TWAC 2020

Duncan is a brilliant coach with a wealth of coaching and ocean experience. Having rowed across the Atlantic twice he is in a great position to advise other crews on what (and what not) to do. He is also in a fantastic position to advise crews with their coastal training having rowed around almost the entire UK. Duncan ran me through all my boat systems, how to use the chart plotter, how to safely move around the boat, assessed my rowing technique, gave me plenty of little tips and tricks and has helped me with planning further training rows. He is laid back, has a great way of explaining things and is a very patient instructor – If you are rowing an ocean, you want him supporting you. I can’t recommend him enough!

Ross Edgley

As a coach myself I’ve always been amazed at Duncan’s very unique ability to deconstruct someone’s rowing technique, seamanship skills, strengths and weaknesses and then tailor a training program specific to their individuality! The best example of this was the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2019 when he had to tweak, tailor, chop and change his coaching methods based on the individual needs of the rowers he was coaching.
